How to count

How to count

  1. 01

    Women you've had sex with

A one-time partner counts as one. The same person counts once no matter how many times.

  2. 02

    Roughly is fine

The survey relies on self-report too. Few people count precisely past ten, so your best recollection is enough.

  3. 03

    Pick an age group

Counts build up with age. Five partners at 22 and five at 45 sit in different places, so compare with your own age group.

Rank table

Rank is based on the body count T-score. The counts below are guides when comparing with All ages (16–74). Because counts are whole numbers, the score can jump a step at a boundary.

Data

The data and how to read it

  • The baseline: Natsal-3, Britain's national survey

Natsal-3 visited randomly selected households across Britain (2010–12, ages 16–74, 15,162 respondents including 6,293 men, response rate 57.7%). Sensitive questions were answered directly on a computer, unseen by the interviewer. Results were published in The Lancet (2013).

  • The distribution for men

    Lifetime female partners: 0 — 5.5%, 1 — 13.7%, 2 — 8.4%, 3–4 — 15.0%, 5–9 — 23.5%, 10 or more — 33.9%. Median 6 (IQR 2–12), mean 14.1. The mean is pulled up by a few very high counts, so the median is the better midpoint.

  • Positions above ten are estimated

The paper's top band is “10 or more”. Positions within it are estimated from the tail of a log-normal distribution fitted to the 0–9 bands. For all ages the fitted quartiles are 2, 6 and 13, close to the published 2, 6 and 12.

  • Inexperience is more common in Japan

A 2022 survey of 8,000 people aged 20–49 in Japan (The Journal of Sex Research) found 19.8% of men had never had a sexual partner. Among British men aged 25–54 the share with zero is 1.5–5.2%, so a Japanese man may score lower here than he would against Japanese data.

FAQ

FAQ

Who counts as one?
Each woman you've had sex with. The same person counts once no matter how many times.
Why choose an age group?
Counts rise with age. In Natsal-3 the median is 3 for men aged 16–24 and 8 for ages 35–54. Comparing within your age group keeps the position fair.
Is my result stored?
No. Everything is calculated on your device and nothing is sent to our server. The share link contains your number and age group, so choose who you send it to.
Is higher better?
The number only shows your position in the distribution; neither high nor low is better. If you have many or new partners, regular STI testing is a good idea.
What if my number is zero?
Against all ages it's around the bottom 3% (rank E). Against ages 16–24 it's very different, because about one in five men that age report zero.

This shows a statistical position only and says nothing about a person's worth or sexual satisfaction. The baseline is a British survey and may differ from other countries. For adults 18+.
