Dreaming ButterflyNot Tonight's Reality

「You like the nights that aren't real」

You want the night where you don't have to be yourself. Performing, dressing up, being inside an illusion — that's what draws you.

— 「Let me be someone else, just tonight.」

Three lines

Three lines that probably land

  • Strength

You can take someone somewhere daily life never reaches.

  • Weakness

You struggle to take responsibility for who you are once you're back.

  • What you haven't admitted

You truly believe your night self and your day self are different people.

The read

The full read

1What you want at night is escape. Time as a completely different person, with everything the daytime you carries set down. Which is why nights with a sense of reality — a room that smells of ordinary life, your usual way of speaking — are hard for you to enter.

If you could ask one thing of them

Don't bring last night up too much. It was really me, but still.

2You take time. You can't leave reality all at once, so you move toward the illusion slowly. And in that process you become startlingly bold. Things the everyday you would never say, that version of you says easily.

3The problem is after the illusion breaks. In the morning you're slightly embarrassed by last night's self. What was a perfect night for them becomes a memory you'd rather not have witnessed. Unable to explain that gap, you sometimes pull away.

Four axes

Read it through the four axes

Each of the four letters in the code is a lean on one axis. Here's how they come out for this type.

  • SControl · Surrender

You hand it over. Inside the illusion you become bold, but the illusion is built by someone else. Giving up the lead is how you set down your daytime self.

  • ETempo · Endless

Long. You can't leave reality all at once, so you move toward the illusion slowly, a little at a time. By morning you're slightly distant.

  • TRegister · Tender

A room with a sense of reality and the usual way of speaking won't let you in. Only when the atmosphere and the feeling are right does anything catch.

  • XAdventure · Explore

Performing, dressing up, simply being inside an illusion: that's what draws you. A night that repeats the same reality has no value.

Things this type tends to say

  • 「Don't use my name tonight.」
  • 「Don't ask me about yesterday.」
  • 「This room looks too lived-in.」
Neighbours

One letter away: how the neighbours differ

These are the types that match on three axes and flip on one. Read them and you'll see which axis actually decided your result.

  • Only the Control axis is flipped

    LETXStaging Firefly

The Firefly builds the world; the Butterfly becomes someone else inside it. The Butterfly transforms inside the Firefly's staging; the only difference is who's the lead role.

  • Only the Tempo axis is flipped

    SQTXReckless Moth

The Moth dives into a short night and regrets it a little straight afterward. The Butterfly takes its time becoming someone else and feels a little embarrassed the next morning. The regret comes straight after for one and the next morning for the other.

  • Only the Register axis is flipped

    SEHXDrifting Jellyfish

The Jellyfish sinks to lose itself; the Butterfly moves into an illusion to become someone else. 'No self' is the Jellyfish; 'a different self' is the Butterfly.

  • Only the Adventure axis is flipped

    SETCMoody Cat

The Cat stays itself and decides by mood whether to allow it. The Butterfly wants to stop being itself. The Cat's night is a mood; the Butterfly's is an illusion.

Compatibility

Compatibility

Compatibility isn't a single score. "How much it burns tonight" and "whether it lasts" are measured separately, so you see not only your best match but the one that burns brightest and never lasts.

Best match

LETXStaging Firefly

Overall 93

A Firefly that builds nights that aren't real, and a Butterfly that loves them. The Firefly raises a world with lighting and sound, and inside it the Butterfly slowly becomes someone else. Both long, both hungry for something new. A pairing that burns and lasts.

Burns, but doesn't last

LQHXRestless Mantis

Overall 70

The Mantis's 'I want to try' overlaps with the Butterfly's 'I want to perform' for just a moment. On the first night the Butterfly says things it never normally would, and the Mantis acts on them instantly. But the Mantis prepares nothing and moves fast, while the Butterfly needs time to leave reality. The Mantis starts and finishes before the illusion exists.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Is a Dreaming Butterfly (SETX) being distant the next morning a sign of regret?
Less regret than a memory they'd rather not have witnessed. SETX genuinely believes the night self and the day self are different people. The kindest thing is not to dig up last night in the morning. In their own words: 'That was really me, in its own way.'
Does nothing start in a room that looks lived-in?
It's harder. For SETX the night begins with erasing any sense of reality. Dim the lights, change the sound, call them something different: any one of those opens the door. You don't need all of them.
Which type is the worst fit for SETX?
The Honest Rabbit (SQHC). The Rabbit wants to start soon, with reality intact; the Butterfly wants to leave reality first. Both surrender, so there's nobody to begin, and the entrances they want are opposites.
